Wollert soil: reactive basalt clay, AS 2870 and why slabs crack

Wollert sits on the Victorian Volcanic Plain. Reported soil conditions comprise a layer between 0.2 and 2.9 metres thick, averaging around a metre, of very stiff to hard high plasticity silty clay over basalt rock. High plasticity residual basaltic clay is the reactive material that drives seasonal movement, which is why edge drainage and slab design matter so much here. Wollert also contains the Wollert Resource Park, roughly 350 hectares with a basalt quarry running since the late 1970s and a landfill operating in previously quarried ground since 2000.
